Three holograph log books, illustrated, of voyages taken by John MacGregor in the canoe Rob Roy. The first describes his solo journey to Paris and back in 1867 as part of Napoleon III's efforts to promote canoeing and includes much description of the Seine and of persons he encountered. The second, well illustrated, documents his 1868 Jordan expedition and contains commentary on local customs and geography as well as a detailed daily narrative of events. The third, also illustrated, is from an 1869 trip in the Zuider Zee.

John MacGregor, Vice President of the Ragged Schools Society and founder of the Shoeblack Brigade, took up canoeing in 1865. His narrative of his first long journey, A Thousand Miles in the Rob Roy Canoe (1866), went through thirteen editions. He chronicled his journey to the Middle East in The Rob Roy on the Jordan, Red Sea and Gennesareth (1869). A dedicated promoter of the sailing canoe, he founded the Royal Canoe Club.
